Aston Martin DB6
This car is one of the last of the DB6 range; the Mark 2 has many worthwhile improvements and can be recognised by its flared wheelarches. This example was owned by the Asprey family (of Bond Street jewellery fame) and has been maintained by the Aston Martin factory at Newport Pagnell for most of its life. It has the Vantage engine developing 325 bhp from factory figures and has recently been fitted with a reconditioned Getrag 5-speed gearbox..
Incorporating a stiffer non-superleggra construction chassis, with more aluminium and less steel in the roomier hand crafted body for a weight penalty of a mere 17 lbs (7.7 Kg) above the DB5. A longer wheelbase with a modified roof-line resulted in genuinely usable rear seats, and the distinctive Kamm tail solved the aerodynamic rear body lift experienced on earlier models.
The DB6 Mk2 was introduced in 1969, originally with the intention of naming it the DB7. The DB7 idea was eventually dropped and DB6 production in Mk2 form continued until 1970, overlapping the DBS, with a total of 240 Mk2’s manufactured at Newport Pagnell. Distinguishing new features for the Mk2 included modified, more comfortable front seats, wider wire wheels and flared wheel arches.
The classic Tadek Marek 4 litre twin overhead camshaft engine was retained from the DB5, now fully developed and reliable. Our car, DB6 Mk2, a 1969 model is a genuine factory Vantage specification, producing a claimed 325 BHP on triple 45 DCOE Weber carburettors.
Only 71 in total Vantage DB6 Mk2’s were produced, this being one of only three such equipped with optional automatic transmission.
A fully comprehensive and clearly expert restoration using Aston Martin factory parts was undertaken in Switzerland in the eighties, commissioned by the then owner. The DB6 was subsequently entrusted to the next owner, a well-known Bond Street Jeweller, during whose eight-year ownership the car was Aston Factory prepared with little regard to expense. Still in splendid, standard condition, with the added benefit of an unleaded fuel cylinder head conversion, this beautiful DB6 Mk2 Vantage has been maintained and documented in a likewise fashion by the current custodian.
